Linda Vaughn, the legendary “Miss Hurst Golden Shifter”

*

Linda Vaughn, the lovely, leggy, legend of the auto racing scene from the 60′s through the early 80′s was better known as– Miss Hurst Golden Shifter. She was a trophy queen whose voluptuous looks and charm often stole the show at auto racing events she attended– SCCA, NASCAR, Indy & Formula One, among others.  Linda has been knocked by many for setting Women’s Lib back with her busty displays, but her passion for the sport ran deep and she had a major impact– not just in promoting the sponsors, but also in advancing women’s racing.  Vaughn earned her SCCA competition license at the Bob Bondurant School of High Performance Driving and then got behind the wheel and raced.

I had no idea spokesmodels used to be classy!

I love that fool in the bucket hat with both arms around Ms. Vaughn. His face…”Oh my god I can’t believe this is happening.”

I’m going to kiss the Hurst shifter in my ’67 right now, just to be a little closer to those legendary gals.

I’m w/ you on the number of comments…..especially the Jackie Stewart and last Steve McQ entries— i loved those and was hopeful of reading likeminded comments— pretty bummed about it.

Linda Vaughn is still leaving an indelible mark in nearly every form of motorsports. I think drag racing fans tend to think of her as our own, but we’ve had to get used to sharing her with open-wheel and stock car fans as well. When you went to a big race and couldn’t get Richard Petty’s or Don Garlit’s autograph, having your picture taken with Miss Hurst more than made up for it. To the racing fan, Linda’s as much of an icon as Bettie Page.

When you approach her for the first time to have your picture taken with her, she acts as if she’s known you for years and can’t wait to throw an arm around you and pull you a little closer into her world.
She seems to have a photographic memory of her fans and friends, remembers many of their names and recalls meeting them five or ten years prior. Of course she’s met thousands and thousands of admirers over the years and couldn’t possibly remember them all.

    Then again, maybe she can!

My mom made most of her (Linda’s) outfits in the late 60′s. For being a teenager at that time, it was quite exciting when she came over for a fitting! She is very classy/smart and KNOWS racing.
