DENNIS HOPPER | SOMETIMES IN A CAREER, MOMENTS ARE ENOUGH

*

“There are moments that I’ve had some real brilliance, you know.

But I think they are moments.  And sometimes, in a career, moments are enough.

I never felt I played the great part.  I never felt that I directed the great movie.

And I can’t say that it’s anybody’s fault but my own.”

“In the 50s, when me and Natalie Wood and James Dean and Nick Adams and Tony Perkins (Anthony Perkins) suddenly arrived… God, it was a whole group of us that sort of felt like that earlier group – the John Barrymores, Errol Flynns, Sinatras, Clifts – were a little farther out than we were… So we tried to emulate that lifestyle. For instance, once Natalie and I decided we`d have an orgy. And Natalie says ‘O.K., but we have to have a champagne bath.’  So we filled the bathtub full of champagne.  Natalie takes off her clothes, sits down in the champagne, starts screaming. We take her to the emergency hospital.  That was our orgy, you understand?” –Dennis Hopper

“I am just a middle-class farm boy from Dodge City and my grandparents were wheat farmers.  I thought painting, acting, directing and photography was all part of being an artist.  I have made my money that way.  And I have had some fun.  It’s not been a bad life.”  –Dennis Hopper

If it weren’t for the efforts of curatot Walter Hopps, who knows if the brilliant photographic works of Dennis Hopper would have survived to be with us today.  It was the mid-1970s, and Hopps was at Hopper’s place in Taos, New Mexico and got a  first-hand taste of the artist’s insanity.  Hopper was in a drug-fueled dementia, as he riddled the adobe walls of his home with machine gun fire.  Walter Hopps recalls–

“I knew things were really terrible out there,” Hopps recalled. “So on my next visit I told Dennis, ‘I’ve got to have the negatives and contact sheets of all your photographs secured in the museum, where they’ll be safe and we can sort things out.’ They were strewn about and scattered all over the place. We gathered them up as best we could, and packed them in a couple of boxes. Materials secured, I got in the car and made my getaway.”

  1. My dad was friends with Dennis in New Mexico before I was born. When I was 12, I met the man, the myth at my house in Dallas. He was in town for the premiere of Water World. He ate ribs in a grey suit with a buzzed haircut. I also have some pictures, from that day and also from their daze in New Mexico. I was alarmed to find out he was gone, wish I had known him a little more. Thanks for these photos!

  2. Again, absolutely superbsite! As you know given all the info, it takes quite awhile to download

As for Hopper, his “Mt. Summit” role must be that of Frank Booth in “Blue Velvet” (l986) Easily among all-time villians!!!

& as for NATALIE, he did introduce her to “Wine” “Ludes” Coke” “Pot” “LSD” & other things

Matter of fact when she was pals’ with> M. O’brien, she once tried to sneak her out of her bedroom window & there he was, on his bike HOPPER waiting.

Trouble with a capitall “T” for the squeaky clean Margaret of course
    However, he found her square

    THANK YOU

    EXCELLENT STUFF FOLKS!
